Knee Replacement Surgery at Stenum Hospital
The keys to a successful knee replacement surgery involve proper diagnosis and technology selection, skilled surgeons, and a well implemented rehabilitation process.

New technology has been developed to improve results, reduce wear, and extend the lifespan of these solutions. Antioxidant Infused Technology is used to resist harmful polyethylene oxidation, as well as new Porous Titanium Constructs to allow bone to rapidly grow into the implant, which can enhance fixation.

While these advanced technologies may not be available in the US, they are available to international patients at Stenum Hospital.
At Stenum, top surgeons, advanced technology, and a comprehensive rehabilitation program, are combined to achieve superior long lasting results.

Biomet Oxford® Partial Knee Replacement
The Oxford® Partial Knee implant from Biomet Orthopedics is a partial knee implant designed to repair only one side of the knee (the medial side), making it much smaller than a total knee implant.
In patients with only limited knee arthritis, known as medial compartment arthritis, surgeons may elect to perform a partial knee replacement. Unlike total knee replacement that removes all the knee joint surfaces, a partial knee replacement replaces only one side of the knee joint. Some advantages of the Oxford® partial knee replacement are that it removes 75% less bone and cartilage, is less painful, enables a more rapid recovery, and provides more natural motion when compared to a total knee replacement

By retaining all of the undamaged parts, the joint may bend and function more naturally.
Knee osteoarthritis usually occurs first in the medial (inside) portion of the joint. In knees that are otherwise healthy, a partial knee implant procedure can preserve the healthy bone, cartilage, and ligaments, potentially preventing or delaying the need for total knee replacement.

The Only One of Its Kind
Research has shown that partial knee replacements with moveable plastic bearings like the Oxford® Partial knee have low wear rates, potentially giving them even longer life expectancies.

The free floating nature of the device potentially provides for a more natural feeling knee

More Natural Motion
In a healthy knee, the meniscus serves as a shock absorber between the ends of the bones. The Oxford® Partial knee is the first partial implant with an artificial meniscal bearing designed to glide freely throughout the knee's range of motion, more closely replicating normal movement. The free floating nature of the device potentially provides for a more natural feeling knee.

Long-term Durability
Published long-term clinical results on the Oxford® Knee demonstrated a 98% success rate at 10 years and 95% at 15 years and beyond, equaling the results of the most successful total knee replacements.

Biomet Vanguard® Complete Knee Replacement
The Vanguard® Complete Knee represents the clinical heritage of other Biomet® knee systems and combines it with state-of-the-art design features to produce the most comprehensive total knee system available today.
Designed to fit the entire population, regardless of age, gender or stature The Vanguard® Complete Knee System was designed to be the most flexible knee on the market, allowing a custom-fit of the femoral, tibial and patellar components independently, thus addressing the largest possible percentage of the population.

Increased Motion
An important issue for knee implant design is how the kneecap moves against the new femoral component. Knee implants are designed with a groove, or track, that the kneecap rides in as the leg straightens and bends. How this track is designed is important because it partially determines how mobile the knee is and, to a certain extent, the level of comfort the implant provides.
The Vanguard® Knee implant was designed with a more forgiving track, which allows the knee to achieve motion without sacrificing healthy bone during surgery. Additionally, some manufacturers promote that the angle at which the kneecap moves against the thighbone is higher in women. However, one study actually indicates that a person's height has a greater affect on the tracking angle than his or her gender.1 The Vanguard® Knee is designed with a unique kneecap track that allows the knee implant to match nearly any patient regardless of gender or stature.

High Flexion
The Vanguard® Complete Knee is engineered to accommodate up to 145 degrees of flexion without the need to remove additional healthy bone. A high degree of flexion is an important consideration for any person desiring to continue leading an active, productive lifestyle.

Implant Comfort
The Vanguard® system offers the broadest range of available implant sizes. This is important because implants that are too wide can hang over the bone and irritate the soft tissues in the knee. When the Vanguard® Knee was introduced in 2003, it was the narrowest knee on the market, providing a more natural feeling implant.

Custom Fit
The Vanguard® Knee features 90 different size combinations and twice the femoral size options, more than any other knee replacement system.
With more size options than other implant manufacturers, surgeons can provide more of a custom fit to patient's bones.
Additionally, any size femoral implant is engineered to fit with any size tibial implant. This provides more size options than other implant manufacturers, which allows surgeons to provide more of a custom fit of each Vanguard® femoral and tibial implant to patients' bones, addressing the largest possible percentage of the population.

Durability
Polyethylene (plastic) is used to replace the damaged cartilage at the top of the tibia (shinbone). The polyethylene acts to absorb the stress of everyday activities. The Vanguard® Complete Knee System's polyethylene components are Direct Compression Molded to help increase the implant's longevity. The process of direct compression molding has been shown to produce more durable implant components than other conventional methods.

Biomet Antioxidant Infused Technology and Regenerex® Porous Metal
Biomet continues to work on introducing new technologies that increase the longevity of its orthopedic implants. Two such technologies have been introduced recently with implants available for knee replacement.

The only polyethylene infused with vitamin E to provide strength and oxidative stability without compromise.

E1™ Antioxidant Infused Technology surpasses the limitations of first generation highly crosslinked polyethylene. This unique technology, developed by Biomet’s engineers and the research power of Massachusetts General Hospital, is the first vitamin E stabilized highly crosslinked polyethylene bearing material that has been shown in testing to provide high mechanical strength and true oxidative stability.

Produced using a patent pending second-generation technology and proprietary process using Isostatically compression molded polyethylene barstock, as used in clinically proven ArCom® polyethylene, is processed below the melt temperature to maintain the strength of the crosslinked polyethylene.
Infused with vitamin E to stabilize free radicals and prevent oxidative degradation, testing has shown that E1™ Antioxidant Infused Technology offers; Fatigue strength greater than first generation re-melted HXLPE1-3, is stronger than sequentially crosslinked and annealed materials after an environmental stress cracking (ESC) study, and has true oxidative protection without re-melting.

Regenerex® Porous Titanium Construct
Clinically Proven Material. Advanced Porous Technology.
Regenerex® Porous Titanium Construct unites the proven clinical history of titanium with an enhanced interconnecting pore structure, resulting in a revolutionary material that provides for high levels of biologic fixation.
